About
Co-Location
Co-location
is the hosting arrangement in which your equipment is housed in
a dedicated facility designed with resources which could include
a secured cage or cabinet, regulated power, dedicated Internet
and telecommunication connections, physical security and support
staff.
What
follows is a brief review of the major issues that should be considered
in choosing a co-location site.
Park
Place Communications, LLC
PPC
can provide a climate controlled and secured environment for electronic
equipment. Co-locating with PPC eliminates the need to construct
and maintain your own Point of Presence (POP) and regeneration
sites, saving you capital and reducing critical time required
to expand your network.
"Carrier-Neutral"
This
is an essential criterion. When it comes to the carriers providing
connectivity for a co-location facility, the more the merrier. One
of the things you want to do is make sure you have several alternative
carriers available to provide your Internet connection and telecommunication
services. You want to avoid being obligated to working with one
carrier. Having choices is important for both price and flexibility.
Power
Recent
brownouts and blackouts in California have underscored the need
for co-location facilities to have a reliable and redundant power
supply. Obtaining electric service is increasingly expensive for
facility operators, and some maintain more capacity than others.
Know as much as you can about how much energy your equipment will
require, and whether the provider can meet your needs.
Redundancy
Having
enough power isn't enough. Your servers must continue to operate
if a facility loses power. Uninterruptible power supply (UPS) systems
featuring battery banks and powerful generators are standard in
most quality data centers. The best facilities will have backups
for the backup equipment in these key areas.
Physical
Security
24/7
secure facility access is essential for maintaining your equipment.
Be sure you understand which employees will be granted access
to the facility, and in what scenarios an employee of the co-location
company or vendor technician will be allowed to access your equipment.
Meet-Me-Room
For
tenants to terminate their fiber optic conduits; allows interconnectivity
between tenants; enables tenants to receive service from non-tenant
telecom providers.
